The Oslo Governance Centre released its Annual Report for 2010, which describes how, after the transition towards its new mandate, new premises and new internal structure operated in 2009, it has had the opportunity to consolidate its work and lead and promote innovation within its four mandated areas, namely:
-
Conducting systematic analysis and reviews of UNDP’s work around the globe aimed at learning from experiences in the field.
-
Based on this analysis, contribute to programming and policy advisory services at the national, regional and global levels.
-
Support countries to conduct nationally owned and led governance assessments that serve to strengthen democratic governance at the country level.
-
Address new and emerging areas of democratic governance and building the capacity of UNDP’s front-line staff to address these new challenges.
The Report offers an overview of the key outputs of the two Units (Governance Assessments Unit and Policy and Programme Analysis and Learning Unit), a description of new publications released by both Units, an updated staff list, and a selection of eight stories “making a difference”, meant to illustrate the significant contributions that OGC’s work has made to democratic governance. On governance assessments, the stories included in the Report as examples of making a difference are the study on the use of governance indicators in Africa conducted by a South-South Consortium of African organizations (co-financed by the European Commission and UNDP), the pioneering work on governance indicators for complex post-conflict settings in Iraq, the successful Chilean democracy assessment which is setting a best practice in the field, and the innovative initiative on participatory governance assessments for REDD+.
