The Johns Hopkins Centre for Civil Society Studies seeks to improve understanding and effective functioning of nonprofit, philanthropic or civil society organizations in the United States and throughout the world, thereby enhancing these organizations' contribution to democracy and the quality of human life. The Centre is part of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Policy Studies and carries out its work through a combination of research, training and information sharing, both domestically and internationally.

The Johns Hopkins Comparative Nonprofit Sector Project, which is a project of the Centre, aims to analyze the scope, structure, financing and role of the private nonprofit sector in a cross-section of 35 countries. The project examines geographic patterns and characteristics of the nonprofit sector and produces a global assessment of civil society that analyzes the scope, size, composition and financing of the sector, including data on nonprofit employment, volunteering, expenditures and revenues.
